Refresh, Renew, Regroup

After nearly two weeks in Northern CA and before that two weeks of travel to Memphis, Philadelphia and Virginia, I feel ready to crash for a few days.

Sitting here in San Francisco airport, I try to catch my breath. Fortunately I did two things during this trip to help me refresh. I went to a Japanese bath and spa--a vacation in an afternoon. A few days later I took a short hike through a redwood forest.

As an artist and an activist, I begin to realize how important it is to maintain a rhythm of creativity, work, socializing and quiet rest. Going to Quaker meeting for worship, walks in the woods, evenings with Buffy the Vampire Slayer and good laughs with friends all help me to recharge.

On the road I find it virtually impossible to maintain any sort of routine. My writing, my healthy eating, my exercise all goes to the wayside. I think that is the challenge for me this year, to do the work while I still live my life.

Any suggestions?

I agree with you that being on the road is exhausting, but it's also so interesting in it's own way. Starting this Saturday with Yearly Meeting, I'm going to be travelling for three weeks, getting home in late August. Then I start school again during the week after. Ugh. You're not the only one whose routine of daily life gets off track by being on the road. This time I'm going to try really hard to keep up with my routine so that I don't burn out part way through England.

No suggestions but if you figure it out, share the wealth. The only thing I know to do is to take walks (morning, preferably). Even in urban environments they can be journeys of discovery. Take a collapsible umbrella in your luggage so that that the weather won't deter.

The False Image of LIA

LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Gerard Wellman, business administrator for Love in Action, and a former Love in Action client, said Sept. 13 that the organization has been in contact with the state but would not comment further. “As a church, we operate under a different set of rules,” Wellman said. Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped. They sat quietly as the music played. I stood back stage puzzled, baffled. Now what do I do? Wait? Go out anyway? And I wondered for a moment, Did they hate it? Did I confuse them? Offend them?
