Doin' Time at Home

Phew, I finally had a few days to sort out my apartment. I recently went from a two room apartment to a one-room studio. Actually it is the same apartment, but my fabulously queer landlord and his partner needed another room for all their fabulous queer stuff. That meant I lost my kitchen (there is more to this story, but it is too complicated to explain.)

Anyway, I needed to create a kitchen, living room, dinning room, office space and work-out area in my one very large bedroom. With some help from highly skilled (and heavy lifting) friends Christina, Jen and Chris I moved everything and created an organized and pleasant home. I even have room to rehearse!

Now that the place is in order, I can get back to writing. I am VERY excited about my new piece, The Re-Education of George W. Bush. I'm more than half way done building it.

Well I hope you got a break on the rent.

I did something like that back in the early 90s, when I was renting what was a large room in someone's basement. Little kitchen area with small fridge and hot plates. It can be cozy, and if nothing else it teaches you how to make the best use of space.

I'm excited about The Re-Education of George W. Bush too! Hope to get to see it when it's finished.

Nice pics, although it felt strangely voyeuristic... :) Congrats on getting the apartment together. It's not easy living in small space, but I know for me when I've lived in small spaces it's helped me keep the junk/stuff to a minimum. For birthdays and Christmas, just tell everyone the only thing you have room for is consumables...yum! :)

P -

I wish I had a place to my own at the moment. I HATE apartment hunting.

Are those liquor bottles or cooking oils, etc?

:)

Yum, wine bottles :)
Abby, where can I get a Homo Gnome? I need someone to take home to Mom this coming Thanksgiving. I don't mind short.

Bruce, yes, I got a sweet deal. I'm never moving (unless the gnome has a better place and even lower rent)

Rising Up: Voyeuristic?!? Does that make me an exhibitionist?
Do you think I would take my personal life and display it in front of the world? Oh, well, yeah, on stage, but I'm not running around in my "Not for Sissies" thong? That would be exhibitionist of me and should you stare even enlarge the photo, then yes, that would make you voyeuristic?

Rob, yes.

A homo gnome! That's an excellent idea! They should sell them at garden centers and stuff, it'd be a hit! They could come in different little fey poses and designer gnome hats!

Anyway, it looks really cozy, Peterson. Try to encourage your landlords to curb their fabulously materialistic streak, or they'll become prisoners of their own stuff. (And you would have to sleep in the cupboard under the stairs. Oh no!)

Remember, there's no place like homo.
Anyone have that experience when you rearrange furniture or hang up curtains or put up a shelf, then you go back and just admire it?

I guess I do that too with some of my writing. I think of that passage in Genesis after the character, God, creates something, s/he steps back, admires the creatiion and says, "It's pretty good!"

Yeah, that is how I feel about my cozy little place (which doesn't feel small or cramped at all.) I'm pleased that one can be in the sitting room area and not see into the kitchen. Don't know if I can attribute my success to a "gay gene of home decorating" or just 10 years of living in NYC where space was a premium.

Anyway, I don't want to leave the house, but since I don't have Internet at home (or a TV--but I have a record player and soy milk maker!) I need to get out every now and then.
Oh, and please note in the "kitchen" photo the small jar of Marmite on the right and my awesome rice cooker on the left.

In the "panorama" shot, you will notice a black and white wedding photo on the table (my parents).

Marmite? Please to be explaining...
Marmite: A primer...

Marmite is not only renowned for its errr, distinctive flavour, but it's also a good source of B vitamins, completely vegetarian, is a low fat food and is very low in sugar.

Marmite contains none of the major allergens. Some people might have a reaction to celery extract, a minor component of the spice extract that is listed in the ingredients.

This and loads more at the Marmite site. It's yummy, but some people HATE it.

Looks a little cozy (and comfortable) there. Kind of like something I was considering before I found this monstrosity of an apartment.

My Gay Husband--A Spouse Speaks Out

The other day I received the following e-mail from Susanne, a woman who found out her some years ago that her husband has same-sex attractions. I felt so moved by her words that I asked her permission to share them with you on the blog. I (recently) saw your Doin Time... and I was the one who asked about your wife during the discussion period that followed. I just read your thoughts on What About the Spouse ....and I can say, most women who find out their husbands are gay feel ALL of those things you wondered about....some in more degrees than others... When my husband was dragged out of the closet because of his irreverent, immoral, and amoral behavior that our, then, 14 and 16 year old sons had to find on our home computer, I went into the closet. I didn't know what to pray for.... Do I pray that this will go away? Do I pray that he could go back to the way things were in our family before we knew about him,? Do I pray that I could go back to the way things were? After all ,...

The False Image of LIA

John Smid and me-Graduation 1998 (above) & John Smid today (left) By now many have heard that Tennessee's Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities determined that the "ex-gay" program, Love in Action, is operating two “unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities”. LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Gerard Wellman, business administrator for Love in Action, and a former Love in Action client, said Sept. 13 that the organization has been in contact with the state but would not comment further. “As a church, we operate under a different set of rules,” Wellman said. Curious, and what rules might these be? What is even more curious is that according to LIA's site only one staff member ...

Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped. They sat quietly as the music played. I stood back stage puzzled, baffled. Now what do I do? Wait? Go out anyway? And I wondered for a moment, Did they hate it? Did I confuse them? Offend them? Bore them into a coma? After what ...
