Troubling Times at LIA?

The Queer Action Coaltion, who keeps a steady hand on the pulse of Love in Action, wonders if recent signs point to genuine difficulties Memphis-based "ex-gay" program. They consider:
  • As has been public knowledge LIA has had two live in facilities for their adult program The Source. Over the weekend we were informed that they have been forced to shut down one of their houses due to lack of enrollment. Again, this is unconfirmed, however, if true, would mean this has happened since the infamous summer of '05 in which the "Christ Centered Ministry" faced numerous protests, and world-wide media attention for their dealings with youth.

  • At a screening of "What Does Love In Action Look Like: The Preface" this past weekend we were informed by a source close to Dr. Stephen Rice, LIA Borad Member, that he has been heard murmuring that the devil is in the midst at Love In Action, refering to internal conflicts within the organization.

  • Sources close to us who've happened to be driving by LIA have noticed fewer and fewer visitors at their facilities in Memphis.
The post goes on to quote a cry for help from a recent LIA newsletter and ends with a heartfelt plea for genuine change on the part of the "ex-gay" program.

How sad for LIA...maybe they could get all the ex-lesbians to bake a bunch of cupcakes as part of their lessons in how to be straight women, and then the ex-gay men could hawk them (because commerce outside the home really is a man's job) at church or something. Buy a cupcake for an ex-fruitcake. Eat some cookies so these queers won't have nookie. Try some cake so we can keep filling them with self-hate...What do you think?

The False Image of LIA

John Smid and me-Graduation 1998 (above) & John Smid today (left) By now many have heard that Tennessee's Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities determined that the "ex-gay" program, Love in Action, is operating two “unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities”. LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped.
