Doin' Time in Cookeville, TN


Wonderful weekend in Middle Tennessee for a show (and I got to visit a friend to attended LIA with me.) The Cookeville performance went VERY well with an amazingly diverse crowd that went from high school students to eldery Quakers with plenty of genderqueer radical faeries, middle-aged lefties, college students and straight couples in the mix.







I was hosted by Diana and Annie at the Hidden Springs Orchards. They run the Hidden Springs Nursery, that provide organic, pest-resistant specialty fruit trees. Needless to say I had the freshest organic produce possible, amazing blueberry jam and wine AND something I have always wanted to try--Acorn bread. (Acorns are one of the most nutritious foods on the planet and take FOREVER to peel, leech and prepare, but hmm, very good.

I also met some amazing people including Miriam and Indigo, a lesbian couple from Bristol, England who are in the states for a few months to learn about organic farming. Loads of fun!

Oh! and I got to see the divinity herself, Suzie Crashcourse (formerly Cynaide), who currently resides at a queer commune near Cookeville. What a thrill to see this individual who is a living work of art and activism.

Those pictures are awesome! Why doesn't MY job allow me to hang out on organic farms all weekend?....

When are you going to visit me in Philly? (I will be moving away in June or July, after all....)

Willie, yeah it took a few tries with the butterfly before I got it just the way I wanted the shot. There was one space I past with literally HUNDREDS of butterflies filling the air. Ah! Love it.

I saw Peterson in Cookeville. It blew me away! I am a UU who is very much involved with LGBTQ issues in Cookeville. Advocacy is on the rise and BIG KUDOS to The Blacks (Hector & crew) for making this happen. Quakers Rock! I remember that Peterson said that the only way we are going to be able to depolarize the country is by telling our own stories. That's poetry and so very important. Peterson's show was a DEAR, DEAR memory of my time in Cookeville. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO!!!

The False Image of LIA

John Smid and me-Graduation 1998 (above) & John Smid today (left) By now many have heard that Tennessee's Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities determined that the "ex-gay" program, Love in Action, is operating two “unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities”. LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Gerard Wellman, business administrator for Love in Action, and a former Love in Action client, said Sept. 13 that the organization has been in contact with the state but would not comment further. “As a church, we operate under a different set of rules,” Wellman said. Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped.
