OMG! Marvin, Marvin, Marvin...

You seriously asked a 70 something year old married man to de-gay his house so you wouldn't experience temptation? What about the scripture that says "...in this life you will have trouble..."? I know, I know, we should do our best to stay out of temptation's way...but you're gonna have to deal with it! Remember, "they overcame by the blood of the Lamb and by their testimony!" Taking JC Penney's out of the house won't cure your thoughts!

Congrats on the call up from Exodus! Hopefully you'll find your experiences with them as rewarding as it has been for millions of others.

Marvin,

You haven't even started up Straight Way and Exodus is already trying to link up with you? Don't take this the wrong way, but how much of your ministry is actually in place? It just seems odd to me that you just started up and you're already getting linked up with this big-name program.

What kinds of activities or programs is Straight Way doing right now? How many people is it serving?

Take care of yourself!

Peterson, Marvin said he tried to get a hold of you. Maybe you can use your "caller ID" to get back in touch with him.

Or, look up the Church he is working under.

I am glad that Marvin alknowledged that he might/will still have gay attractions for the rest of his life. While he CAN curtail his gay activites, and get married....he has alknowledged that this will be something he has to deal with for the rest of his life. I can give kudos to your honesty.

What he should* do now is talk to some guys who have been living like this for 10-20-20+ years and find out what it's like.

(***I said "should", but of course that's just my opinion and Marvin has to find his own way.)
joe, I can't say for sure, but I know that the Joseph that always got me was this one:

Yes, the movie Joseph was fine, but how does one compete with flannelgraph?

Oh poor Marvin and the Penney's catalog. Yes...I remember them well. And the Sears. The Montgomery Wards. Spiegel...when I could get my hands on one. But even newspaper advertising can be dangerous (I get the sense Marvin doesn't read the newspapers much though...). And it's really remarkable (or not depending on your point of view) how much temptation you can find in Biblical art. Ironically, it was films like Cecil B. DeMille's "Sign Of The Cross" that prompted the establishment of the Motion Picture Production Code. Marvin should probably not watch that one, not least of which for the quick shot of Charles Laughton's Nero sitting on his throne with a very comely young man seated on the floor next to him wearing...well...pretty much just a smile. Of course DeMille only did that to show the audience how wicked those pagans were.
anonymous, I won't call Marvin if he doesn't want to talk. I have learned to respect the boundaries of ex-gays. I don't take it personally; I used to do the same thing as a way to keep myself safe from potentially subversive sources.

I'll let Marvin contact me in his own time. (But I miss chatting with you Marvin!! I know you read these comments.)

kj, you need to explain this whole flannel graph thing. I know what you are talking about, but I have a feeling that some people may need a little explanation. (but I never discovered the hot factor of it) splain lucy.

I hadn't thought about there being a generational gap when it comes to flannel graph. "In the day", Sunday School teachers would tell Bible and missionary stories by using cut-out, paper characters with a pre-Velcro backing that would stick to a board that was covered with flannel.

Now, that's very interesting, I'm sure, but what was much more interesting to me, was that some of the characters were significantly better looking than others. Samuel, Shamuel, whatever, but two characters were always portrayed as extremely good looking -- King David, as a young man, and Joseph.

Of course I never drew attention to the fact that I thought the characters were very handsome, but who could blame Potipher's wife for noticing the young, chiseled, slave with the V-shaped torso?

Oh my! Have I revealed too much? I trust that such ideas do not bring harm to Marvin and I believe affirms his need to remove any images of Joseph from view. Hopefully the Sword of Truth Ministries does not have a flannel graph collection hidden away somewhere.

My Gay Husband--A Spouse Speaks Out

The other day I received the following e-mail from Susanne, a woman who found out her some years ago that her husband has same-sex attractions. I felt so moved by her words that I asked her permission to share them with you on the blog. I (recently) saw your Doin Time... and I was the one who asked about your wife during the discussion period that followed. I just read your thoughts on What About the Spouse ....and I can say, most women who find out their husbands are gay feel ALL of those things you wondered about....some in more degrees than others... When my husband was dragged out of the closet because of his irreverent, immoral, and amoral behavior that our, then, 14 and 16 year old sons had to find on our home computer, I went into the closet. I didn't know what to pray for.... Do I pray that this will go away? Do I pray that he could go back to the way things were in our family before we knew about him,? Do I pray that I could go back to the way things were? After all ,...

The False Image of LIA

John Smid and me-Graduation 1998 (above) & John Smid today (left) By now many have heard that Tennessee's Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities determined that the "ex-gay" program, Love in Action, is operating two “unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities”. LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Gerard Wellman, business administrator for Love in Action, and a former Love in Action client, said Sept. 13 that the organization has been in contact with the state but would not comment further. “As a church, we operate under a different set of rules,” Wellman said. Curious, and what rules might these be? What is even more curious is that according to LIA's site only one staff member ...

Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped. They sat quietly as the music played. I stood back stage puzzled, baffled. Now what do I do? Wait? Go out anyway? And I wondered for a moment, Did they hate it? Did I confuse them? Offend them? Bore them into a coma? After what ...
