UK Connections Anyone?

I have a gig in Oxfordshire, England the weekend of September 23-25, 2005. I will most likely be in the UK for up to two weeks and am currently looking for other venues where I can perform or present performace pieces and talks. I sent e-mails to all the MCC gay church groups in England. What I need to find are contacts at universities. If you have any or any other venue suggestions, please email me.
Thanks!

-.-' Sorry, may live here but I my connections don't even reach as far as my neighbours. I've been meaning to check out the university, but not got around to it yet. They have an LGBT soc: LGBTsoc-UBU@bris.ac.uk. The prez is called Chris, but I don't really know him. Their Site.

Most unis will have an LGBT society, I think. Bangor had one, and Bangor's pretty small. Want me to do a hunt-around?

The only other venue in Brizzle I can think of is the Bristol Folk House. They're technically an adult education centre, but they do a lot of music, protest singers, performed poetry, open mic type stuff. They're just generally cool people, really. They might be interested *shrug*. Their website's a bit minimal I'm afraid; the venue itself is small but friendly.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help, I've only lived here... almost a year? A year already? Blimey!

Check and see if there are any Quakers that you could stay with. I might be able to find out about it when I'm there this month, though Bradford-on-Avon is quite far from Oxfordshire, there might be people that will know things like that. I can't guarantee anything though.

Check out Time Out London for venues. Perhaps that's a good place to start. If you do make through London (and I'm still here), drop me a line at quaker_lilies[at]yahoo[dot]com. Good luck!

Puzzled

Last night I performed Transfigurations-Transgressing Gender in the Bible at Imago Dei Metropolitan Community Church in Glen Mills, PA (about 15 miles outside of Philly). I had a diverse audience of about 45 people -- college students, Quakers, straight, bi, trans and lesbian, young and old. I took my time with the piece maintaining a gentle meditative pace. For the ending when I reveal the identity of the narrator, I had instructed the light tech to dim the lights. Then as the closing music swelled, I asked her to raise the lights to their brigthest intensity. With the music playing, I exited. Always (up until last night) at this point the audience applauds, I wait 5 seconds then come out to take a bow. Last night I exited and then nothing. No one clapped. They sat quietly as the music played. I stood back stage puzzled, baffled. Now what do I do? Wait? Go out anyway? And I wondered for a moment, Did they hate it? Did I confuse them? Offend them? Bore them into a coma? After what ...

The False Image of LIA

John Smid and me-Graduation 1998 (above) & John Smid today (left) By now many have heard that Tennessee's Department of Mental Health & Developmental Disabilities determined that the "ex-gay" program, Love in Action, is operating two “unlicensed mental health supportive living facilities”. LIA has until Friday, September 23 to respond. If LIA statements in Eartha Jane Melzer's article are indicative to how the "change" program might respond, we may see LIA change right before our eyes from a clinical mental health compound into a house of praise and worship. Gerard Wellman, business administrator for Love in Action, and a former Love in Action client, said Sept. 13 that the organization has been in contact with the state but would not comment further. “As a church, we operate under a different set of rules,” Wellman said. Curious, and what rules might these be? What is even more curious is that according to LIA's site only one staff member ...

Marvin on the Airwaves

Since coming back out of the closet (ex-ex-gay) in April, Marvin Bloom, a devout Jew for Jesus, has been making the rounds at various podcasts. His gay-friendly rants have been heard on Spanking Bee Arthur , The Flatus Show and more than once on Joe G's Bored Beyond Belief . Currently you can hear Marvin on Episode 81 of Mila and Jayna's Trans-ponder . In fact, you will also get to hear me too since in his new segment, Moments with Marvin, he interviews me. In other news, I have a boyfriend, and he is not Marvin.
